I feel that with Sonic Advance 3 they got it right. The game starts by having you play as either Sonic or Tails. You pick one and the other is your ally. They follow you around and by pressing R you can use their special ability.
Each character in this game has a special ability. Sonic can do this zoom attack, Tails can fly, Amy can use her hammer and so on. Did I say that Amy can use her hammer? You unlock the other three characters as you play and I like how Sega made each one feels special. Using your partner’s special abilities is not just fun, but also feels useful.
The core gameplay is what you would expect. It is fast and fun and very frantic. You have seven different zones and each one has three acts as well as a boss battle.
