I just made my first character, and know I am going to just love it :. I like most of the Final Fantasy games and several other Squaresoft games. Sadly I could not get into this one. First I could not get into the story. When you first start the game there is a cut scene that made no sense to me then you are in a wagon and some guy says something happened and now the whole world has amnesia.
The whole world has amnesia! Dear lord I don’t believe it. The “Your character has amnesia” has be done to death and beyond, I guess it was only a matter of time before it happened to the whole world.
Oddly some of the interface is way out of date. When you have to deliver something you have to manually open your inventory drag the item over the quest text box and click give to give it to them as if this is a late 80’s early 90’s RPG. There are other examples of this arcane way of doing things. I tried all of the starting classes but could not get any of them much higher than level I could not keep doing the same mind numbing quests over and over again.
There was no real story to go along with any of them. Of course each quest had text that gave the reason why you had to go kill X number of Y but its was not part of anything else. There were two quests where the same guy showed up so I guess those two quests were apart of the main quest story but there was not enough context to understand what was going on. Like a person with amnesia I was totally lost and did not know who, what, when, where, how or why. Farmer Z needs you to kill X number of Y because they are destroying his crops.
Ok I’ll go do that but what does this have to do with the story and the world at large? I’m to scared and shy please deliver this to person A. Ok I’ll go do that but how does this help me understand whats going on I have amnesia you know, I don’t know whats going on and none of these quests are telling me anything. Pilgrims are being attacked on the road by Y monsters, go kill X number of Y to clear the way. Oh great this again, another same old same old quest with no connection to anything else.
I leveled up a character doing the same type of quests with no connection to each other until I got bored and started a new character with a different class and starting area. I think I got six characters to level 20 to 26 before I gave up on this game and quit. I’m sure someone will say this has the greatest story of any MMORPG ever made and that may be so but to get to it you have to slog through hours and hours of mind numbing quests while not knowing whats going on.
Also the character creator is limited. You can not customize as many things as you can in other RPGs and what you can is limited to a few choices. Other MMORPGs I have played have kept me going despite the repetitive tasks because there was a story and many of the quest had something that furthered the overall story. From the start I knew where I was and what was going on.
I knew there was a big three way In Final Fantasy XIV all I know is that everyone has amnesia, so I guess everyone is wandering around in a daze doing odd jobs, and that’s the state of the world I adore everything about it in summary and have been playing it every month since my purchase. I feel it is very much so worth the money and I am provided with hours of entertainment and fun.
